Finding Pâtisserie

As a gourmet girl on a budget I like to create opportunities to be a little bit fancy and enjoy the good things in life without spending a fortune. I find that treating yourself to the occasional pâtisserie is one of the easiest ways to do just this. Sitting in a chic little café with a coffee and a cake rarely costs a fortune but feels like a real treat.
I love selecting from the beautiful display of elegantly decorated little cakes with enticing and delicious fillings as it feels like such a decadent pleasure. Once that fateful and agonising decision has been made you linger over each exquisite mouthful like a piece of edible treasure.

Although Berlin is a city of cake lovers and you will find plenty of Backerei and Konditorei all across the city I find that many of these lack the refinery of really good pâtisserie such as you find in France where you can expect the art of cake and pastry to be elevated to perfection. Good cake is something I take very seriously and therefore this list features only the finest places that I have discovered for true artisan pâtisserie.
Hufelandstrasse 10, Prenzlauer Berg
Ah Jubel! C'était l'amour à première vue... Their display counter is a piece of artwork by itself and the beautiful morsels contained within offer a tempting and unusual range of flavours. We had a thyme, apple and cassis parfait which was simply perfect and tasted divine and unique. I wish they would open an outlet in South Berlin as I would be there at least once a week; it is pâtisserie perfection.

Rosenthaler Straße 40-41, Mitte
Sadly Canal is not quite a full café with only a couple of tables outside and they are currently only doing their exquisite ice cream for summer. However, I could not leave out Canal off this list because the éclairs that it specialises in off-season are out of this world. Their instagram game is really on point and they had me obsessing before I had even visited. The top one in the picture is their famous salted caramel version which is unctuous perfection.

Brunnenstraße 39, Mitte
Another place where the counter display is dizzyingly splendid and it is almost impossible to choose. But choose you must and we went for a salted peanut Paris Brest and a hazelnut mousse tart which were both heavenly. It was super busy when we went on a Sunday so we opted for takeaway and devoured them outside a nearby späti, but if you are lucky to get a table then take your time with a fork and enjoy every single delectable bite of these wonderful cakes.

Mon Plaisir
My friend who lives in Paris always brings me a tray of macarons when she visits as I love them so much. Sadly she only visits once a year so in the meantime I get my fix at bijou French café Mon Plaisir which offers some truly delicious, brightly coloured macarons morsels plus a heavenly chocolate selection or sale. The cassis macaron (pictured) is just sublime.

Invalidenstrasse 157, Mitte
If your mouth is not watering at the prospect of a three chocolate mousse cake then you may wish to check that you still have a soul! This simple café in Mitte looks fairly basic which belies the quality of the patisserie offered within. They also do miniature versions so you can try a selection of things all at once.

Princess Cheesecake
Tucholskystraße 37, Mitte
The coffee is terrible so don't waste your money but the cheesecake for which they are famous is simply perfect at this chic café nestled amongst the fancy art galleries on Tucholskystraße in Mitte. There are a huge number of tempting flavours of on offer so bring some friends so you can try them a few.

Some other noteworthy options:
Café Katulki, Neukölln
What the cakes lack in elegance they make up for in scrumptiousness at this lovely vintage style café.
Tigertörtchen - Berlin Cupcakes, Mitte
Remember when cupcakes were all the rage? Here they are always in fashion and are pretty yummy.
No Milk Today - Kreuzberg
Sadly the vegan patisserie Ooh La La is no more but you can still get some killer vegan cake at this cute little café.
Rausch Schokoladenhaus, Mitte
The famous Berlin chocolatier has an elegant upstairs café with a beautiful selection of chocolate gateaux and tortes plus some seriously thick and rich real hot chocolate.
